We interviewed Christoph Marti exclusively for Féroce Magazine because we were fascinated with his ability to adapt to so many different aesthetics, and we just love the way he uses light to his advantage. With strong model choices, modest styling and creative undertones in each shot, we ask Christoph to share with us the secrets to how he works. Translated by Jim Sullivan.
What’s in your camera bag?
I personally love to work with a Phase One IQ3 100mp - but I’m also fond of my Pentax K3. Why do I work with these cameras? Because for me quality is always important and I love the handling of heavy cameras. Middle format cameras like the System from Phase One are the future of professional photography. The large sensor allows small things to be seen which normally wouldn’t be seen by the human eye and this is fascinating. A good photo is for me a photo that you look at for more than two seconds.
Tell us about your education for photography, did you go to university or are you self taught?
I actually used to be a cook. I discovered very quickly my love for photography and decided to change my profession completely. This step was difficult, but I don’t regret it, not one bit. This is for me one of the most beautiful things, every morning I am happy to wake up with the great feeling of being able to carry out my new profession, one which I truly love. A profession that’s really me.
Which image have you taken that has stayed with you? Why is it your ‘stand out image’?
I produce such pictures all the time, magazine covers are certainly what I consider to be my best work, but because I haven’t finished learning I am naturally excited to see further memorable images from myself and look forward to working with more models and get on with bigger projects.
What is your post-production process? Do you do it all yourself or do you work with retouchers?
My work always depends on the project and how much time is allowed. I try to do most of the work myself- but I also work with retouchers.
What skills do you think are imperative for a photographer to have?
One of the most important is things is endurance. Everybody thinks my profession is just making photos! I feel I am more than just a photographer, I am a Marketing Manager, Secretary, Travel Planner, Stylist and so much more. You have to be able to keep up with a lot of tasks, and for a long time.
What motivates you personally to take images?
I am fascinated by pictures. When I was younger, I made pictures and today working together with great people and companies is a fantastic feeling that I have managed to carry on into adulthood. I love it.
How do you manage uncooperative team members or model?
That happens for certain- but they don’t stay long on my set. Either they work together as part of the team with me or they have to go home.
Is there a particular photography that you just can’t stand?
I don’t like it when male photographers show women in a bad way aesthetically. Also when a model styled in underwear is depicted without respect or dignity. Such pictures do not have room in my portfolio.
